All Quiet on the TemporAl Front

I have read considerable military SF by master authors like David Weber, Michael Z. Williamson, David Drake and others, and Virtues of War is at least their equal.

All Quiet on the Temporal Front

This high-powered short story tells the tale of a young military commander and his platoon who attempt to gain access to a heavily-defended terrorist enclosure by using a government-designed "temporal displacement device" or time machine. But the uncertainties of time travel become readily apparent as the platoon quickly faces far more dangerous foes than terrorists, and the young commander must discover a way to escape being trapped in this hostile world.
