Virtues of WAr

I have read considerable military SF by master authors like David Weber, Michael Z. Williamson, David Drake and others, and Virtues of War is at least their equal.

Ships of the Astral Force

Rapier

Class: Fast-attack craft (TFA)
Number in Class: 162
Role: Planetary insertion, interdiction ops
Atmosphere Capable: Yes
Length: 30m
Rank of CO: Lieutenant Commander
Crew: 18 + 11 strike team
Deployable Units: 2 mini drop ships
Armament: 4 anti-vessel missiles
                   2 anti-attack twin cannon
                   1 point defence twin cannon

Not all enemies of the Astral Force are large or obvious, and the fast-attack craft (FAC) is a purpose-built space ship for unconventional warfare. With a carefully-selected and trained crew, an FAC is an elite vessel that specializes in delivering its strike team on target unnoticed. These targets can either be in space (such as smugglers and spy ships) or planetside (such as terrorist cells and persons-of-interest). The FAC is the most integrated Fleet-Corps unit, and the four senior positions (three officers and the cox’n) are always one each from the Line, Strike, Pilot and Support trades.

Kristiansand

Class: Destroyer (WD)
Number in Class: 105
Role: Fleet defence, short-range patrols
Atmosphere Capable: No
Length: 120m
Rank of CO: Commander
Crew: 87
Deployable Units: 2 Hawks
Armament: 2 planetary bombardment batteries
                   30 anti-vessel missiles
                   1 anti-vessel battery
                   2 anti-stealth batteries
                   2 anti-attack batteries
                   4 point defence twin cannon

The destroyer is the workhorse of the Fleet, small and fast enough to respond quickly to sudden threats but powerful enough to deal with most one-on-one combat situations. Often tasked with providing sector defence, these space ships are well-suited to working within a larger force and responding to attacks before the task force’s main body of ships is even threatened. Destroyers do occasionally conduct individual patrols, although usually in low-threat environments.

Asp

Class: Stealth (WZ)
Number in Class: 110
Role: Extra-dimensional strikes
Atmosphere Capable: No
Length: 90m
Rank of CO: Commander
Crew: 40
Deployable Units: None
Armament: 2 torpedo launchers

Stealth ships are unique in human travel, in that they move freely in the fourth spatial dimension that exists in the Bulk, the vast expanse of the revealed Universe beyond the three-dimensional brane thought for millennia to be the entirety of our reality. Tracking their prey through the slight variations in the gravimetric curvature of spacetime caused by mass, stealth ships can penetrate hostile defences without notice and attack with devastating lethality. Although useless for a typical “show of force” operation, the very existence of stealth ships, and their unique ability to remain unseen, gives Terra’s enemies even more reason to lay low.

King Alfred

Class: Cruiser (WC)
Number in Class: 70
Role: Long-range patrols, fleet defence
Atmosphere Capable: No
Length: 170m
Rank of CO: Commander
Crew: 145
Deployable Units: 4 Hawks
Armament: 10 surface bombardment batteries
                   100 anti-vessel missiles
                   2 anti-vessel batteries
                   2 anti-stealth batteries
                   2 anti-attack batteries
                   4 point defence twin cannon

Designed to be powerful enough for effective independent action, the cruiser is also perfectly suited to coordinating fleet defence. Often working in concert with a pair of destroyers, the cruiser is the most cost-effective method for projecting a credible show of Terran force. Often deploying as the flagship of a small task force, the cruiser maintains order both in the space lanes and on the planets under its protection.

Jutland

Class: Battleship (WB)
Number in Class: 35
Role: Space lane superiority, fleet defence
Atmosphere Capable: No
Length: 225m
Rank of CO: Captain
Crew: 400
Deployable Units: 10 star fighters
                             8 Hawks
Armament: 20 surface bombardment batteries
                   500 anti-vessel missiles
                   10 anti-vessel batteries
                   2 anti-stealth batteries
                   10 anti-attack batteries
                   10 point defence twin cannon

The ultimate capital ship, the battleship is the lynchpin of any operation. Although usually accompanied by escorts, this massive space ship often outguns its entire protective screen combined, and has command and control capabilities unmatched by any other mobile unit. Whether leading the attack against the enemy, directing the defence of the Fleet, or providing bombardment cover for a planetary invasion, the battleship fleet is the backbone of the Astral Force.

Artemis

Class: Carrier (WF)
Number in Class: 35
Role: Space lane superiority, long-range fleet defence
Atmosphere Capable: No
Length: 375m
Rank of CO: Captain
Crew: 900
Deployable Units: 200 star fighters
                             20 Hawks
Armament: 12 point defence twin cannon

Specifically designed to carry the Fleet fighter defence force, the carrier provides a capability to react immediately to multiple threats in dozens of directions at once, all long before enemy space ships move into striking range. Carriers are very effective both in controlling vast areas of space (such as during a blockade) and protecting the Fleet. When coupled with the close-in power of a battleship, the stand-off ability of the carrier’s fighter wing can create a fully-layered attack or defence zone.

Normandy

Class: Invasion ship (TI)
Number in Class: 50
Role: Planetary invasion
Atmosphere Capable: Yes (in theory)
Length: 425m
Rank of CO: Captain
Crew: 900 + 2700 in Corps Regiment
Deployable Units: 3 fast attack craft
                             100 strike fighters
                             50 drop ships
Armament: 12 point defence twin cannon

The most awesome projection of Terran power, the invasion ship is a self-contained landing force capable of securing hostile ground and holding it until the arrival of Army troops. Most often deployed in groups of five, invasion ships (and their armada of escorts) maintain an ongoing, forward-deployed posture for the Astral Force and give Terra the ability to strike anywhere troubles arises, anywhere in the colonies, at a moment’s notice.

Protector

Class: Supply ship (LA)
Number in Class: 105
Role: Fleet support
Atmosphere Capable: No
Length: 205m
Rank of CO: Commander
Crew: 190
Deployable Units: 15 Hawks
Armament: 6 point defence twin cannon

No warship can deploy independently forever, and supply ships provide the critical first and second-line support vital to any deployed force. Each supply ship can carry enough stores to support a full invasion force in combat operations for thirty days, including advanced medical facilities and technical repair workshops.
